La Joya ISD Police Officer Saves Infant’s Life in Critical Moment at La Joya High School

Posted Date: 05/07/26 (08:56 AM)

La Joya, TX - Every day, school police officers stand ready to protect and serve - but in a recent critical moment at La Joya High School, that commitment became life-saving action for one La Joya ISD officer. In a moment where every second mattered, the swift and decisive action Officer Ashley Melgarejo saved the life of a choking infant.

Officer Melgarejo was assigned to the south-side student pickup area at La Joya High School when a distressed parent urgently approached her, reporting that her infant son was choking and unable to breathe.

Without hesitation, Officer Melgarejo responded, immediately assessing the situation and performing life-saving measures. Recognizing the severity of the emergency, she carried out the appropriate infant Heimlich maneuver - placing the infant face down on her forearm and administering back blows. Within moments, a quarter was successfully dislodged from the infant’s airway, restoring his ability to breathe.

The La Joya Fire Department arrived shortly after and assumed medical care of the infant, providing further evaluation and support. Officials confirmed that Officer Melgarejo’s quick response and trained actions were instrumental in preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

“There wasn’t time to think - it was instinct and training that took over,” said Officer Melgarejo. “When the baby started crying, I just kept checking on him. I’m grateful I was able to help at the right time.”

La Joya ISD Police Chief Leonardo Sanchez praised Officer Melgarejo’s actions, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and professionalism in critical situations.

“Officer Melgarejo’s response reflects the very best of our department - calm under pressure, highly trained, and committed to protecting our students and families,” said Chief Sanchez. “This is exactly why we invest in ongoing training and preparedness. Her actions made all the difference.”

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role school police officers play in ensuring the safety and well-being of the entire school community. Beyond maintaining campus security, La Joya ISD officers are equipped with life-saving skills and are prepared to respond at a moment’s notice.

La Joya ISD is proud to recognize officer Melgarejo for her heroic efforts and remains committed to maintaining safe and supportive learning environments across all campuses. Through continued investment in training, partnerships with local emergency responders, and a proactive approach to safety, the district ensures that when emergencies arise, there are systems - and people - in place ready to respond.
