La Joya, TX - Leadership is not just taught - it is practiced, reflected upon, and lived. This belief came to life during La Joya ISD Athletics’ most recent Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) meeting, where student-athletes from across the district engaged in meaningful dialogue centered on leadership, empathy, unity, and the future of athletics.
Bringing together team captains from La Joya High School, Palmview High School, and Juarez-Lincoln High School, the session challenged students to think beyond competition and focus on what it truly means to lead with purpose - on the field, in the classroom, and within their communities.
Structured as a collaborative discussion challenge, students worked in small groups to explore critical topics such as building a positive school culture, fostering empathy among teammates, and defining the core values that every SALT student should embody. Through guided questions and peer-led conversations, participants reflected on their roles as leaders and the lasting impact they can have on others.
“This is exactly what SALT is about - creating opportunities for our student-athletes to grow as leaders, not just players,” said Joe Peña, Executive Director of Athletics for La Joya ISD. “When students are given the space to reflect, communicate, and learn from one another, they begin to understand that leadership is rooted in character, empathy, and accountability. These are skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.”
Throughout the session, students explored how SALT meetings contribute to stronger leadership development, greater unity across campuses, and a deeper sense of pride within La Joya ISD. Conversations highlighted the importance of empathy in athletics and everyday life, with students recognizing that understanding one another’s experiences helps build stronger, more connected teams.
The activity also encouraged participants to consider the value of both unified and small-group discussions, allowing for open, honest conversations that support personal growth while reinforcing collective learning.
As part of the experience, each group identified key takeaways - including one defining quality of a SALT leader, a “Glow” highlighting successes of the program, and a “Grow” focused on future improvements. The session concluded with a powerful reflection, as student representatives shared what it means to be a SALT athlete, reinforcing a shared commitment to leadership, service, and unity.
The SALT program continues to serve as a cornerstone of La Joya ISD Athletics, aligning with the district’s Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 strategic plan by creating environments where students are empowered to grow, lead, and succeed. By investing in leadership development and character education, La Joya ISD is shaping student-athletes who are prepared to excel far beyond the game.
With each meeting, SALT reinforces a powerful message: leadership is not defined by titles or victories, but by the ability to uplift others, lead with integrity, and represent one’s school and community with pride.
