La Joya, TX - Gifted and Talented (G/T) students represent some of the most innovative thinkers, problem-solvers, and creators in today’s classrooms - students whose curiosity, creativity, and advanced abilities challenge them to think beyond the ordinary. During Gifted & Talented Awareness Week, La Joya ISD proudly joined districts across Texas in recognizing the importance of nurturing these exceptional learners while raising awareness of their unique academic and social-emotional needs.
Observed annually during the first full week of April and officially recognized by the Texas Legislature, Gifted & Talented Awareness Week (April 6–10, 2026) highlights the critical role of gifted education programs in supporting students who demonstrate high levels of aptitude in intellectual, creative, or leadership capacities. It also serves as an opportunity to celebrate the educators who inspire and guide these students toward reaching their full potential.
In celebration of this week, La Joya ISD hosted a series of engaging, hands-on camps for middle school G/T students designed to foster innovation, critical thinking, and real-world application of skills. Students participated in interactive learning experiences focused on drones, robotics, and 3D printing - three areas that blend creativity with cutting-edge technology.
During the drone camp, students learned how to maneuver and operate drones using remote controls, gaining foundational knowledge in flight navigation and control. In robotics sessions, students explored coding by programming robots to complete task-based challenges, strengthening their problem-solving and computational thinking skills. Additionally, through 3D printing activities, students utilized CAD software to design original creations as part of their Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students (TSSP) projects, bringing their ideas to life through innovative design processes.
“Gifted education is about more than academic acceleration - it’s about empowering students to think critically, explore their passions, and develop the confidence to innovate,” said Veronica Chavez, Executive Director of Academic Enrichment. “When we provide meaningful opportunities for our G/T students to engage in advanced learning experiences, we are not only supporting their growth, but also preparing future leaders, creators, and problem-solvers who will shape our world.”
These experiences reflect La Joya ISD’s ongoing commitment to providing enriched, student-centered learning opportunities that challenge and inspire learners at every level. By fostering environments where advanced learners can thrive, the district continues to invest in the success and potential of every student.
Aligned with La Joya ISD’s strategic plan, Achieving Excellence Together: 2030, these efforts support Priority 2: Empowered Graduates and Priority 3: Thriving Students by ensuring that all learners - especially those with advanced abilities -are equipped with the tools, experiences, and support needed to excel.
As Gifted & Talented Awareness Week comes to a close, La Joya ISD reaffirms its dedication to recognizing and nurturing the unique talents of its students - celebrating not only what they achieve today, but the limitless possibilities they represent for the future.
