La Joya, TX - In a powerful celebration of leadership, resilience, and limitless potential, La Joya ISD hosted its LEAD Conference at Jimmy Carter Early College High School, bringing together senior girls for a transformative experience focused on empowerment, confidence, and future success.
Held on April 7, 2026, the conference provided students with a unique opportunity to engage in a career expo and hear directly from an inspiring panel of accomplished women across various industries. Through honest conversations and lived experiences, panelists encouraged students to embrace their journeys, build confidence, and recognize their ability to lead and succeed - regardless of the obstacles they may face.
“It’s important that our girls understand that success is not always linear,” said Alyssa Peña, La Joya ISD School Board Vice President and Senior Solutions Sales Manager for Ford Pro. “Success is about continuing to move forward, even when things don’t go your way. Each experience - every challenge and lesson - helps shape your path.”
Peña also emphasized the importance of representation, noting that when young women see others from their own community succeed, it allows them to visualize their own potential and strive even further.
476th District Court Judge Nereida Lopez Singleterry, a proud La Joya ISD alumna, delivered a heartfelt message centered on courage, mentorship, and self-belief.
“We need to be bold, we need to be courageous, and we must remember where we come from,” she shared. “When young women see someone who has walked a similar path, they begin to believe that their goals are possible too. They are the future leaders of our communities - and it is important they know they are not alone.”
The event also highlighted the power of community partnerships, made possible through grant funding from the Junior League of McAllen. Moderator Daisy Gonzalez expressed gratitude for the support, recognizing the role it played in creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect with mentors and explore future pathways.
Aligned with La Joya ISD’s strategic plan, Achieving Excellence Together: 2030, the LEAD Conference supports Priority 2: Empowered Graduates and Priority4: Community Trust, Unity, & Partnership by equipping young women with the tools, mentorship, and confidence needed to succeed beyond high school.
Through experiences like the LEAD Conference, La Joya ISD continues to invest in the next generation of leaders - ensuring that every student not only dreams boldly, but believes in their ability to achieve those dreams.
