La Joya, TX - At La Joya ISD, every student is empowered with the tools, experiences, and support needed to thrive - both in and beyond the classroom. At the heart of this commitment is the district’s C.A.R.E. Academy (Career, Achievement, Readiness, and Empowerment) at Jimmy Carter Early College High School.
Dedicated to supporting students with special needs through hands-on learning, life skills development, and career-focused training, the C.A.R.E. Academy is a specialized program designed to provide opportunities that blend classroom instruction with real-world application.
As part of the program’s commitment to fostering independence and career readiness, students recently participated in a hands-on collaboration with the district’s Child Nutrition Services team. Under structured supervision, students applied skills learned in the classroom by assisting in the preparation of designated food items, reinforcing workplace expectations, teamwork, and food safety practices in an authentic setting.
“This experience is a powerful example of how we are preparing our students for success beyond the classroom,” said Luis Bocanegra, principal of Jimmy Carter Early College High School. “Through hands-on learning and strong partnerships, our students are building confidence, independence, and the skills they need to thrive in their future careers and daily lives.”
Aligned with La Joya ISD’s commitment to its strategic plan, the collaboration with Child Nutrition Services reflects the district’s dedication to advancing Priorities 2 and 3 - Empowered Graduates and Thriving Students. By providing authentic, hands-on learning that promotes independence, confidence, skill-building, and real-world readiness, the district continues ensuring all students - regardless of ability - have access to pathways that ensure lifelong success, gaining not only valuable experience, but also shaping a future filled with possibility.
