2026 LJISD Heart Walk

La Joya, TX - This past weekend, La Joya ISD proudly hosted its annual American Heart Month Walk at La Joya ISD Pack Stadium, welcoming students, families, staff, and community members for a morning dedicated to promoting heart health and strengthening community connections.

With participants dressed in red and united by a shared purpose, the event served as a powerful reminder that heart health is more than an individual responsibility - it is a community priority.

In the Rio Grande Valley, where rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and related health conditions remain among the highest in the state, initiatives like the Heart Walk play a vital role in raising awareness and encouraging proactive wellness. By creating opportunities for families to engage in healthy activities together, La Joya ISD continues to help foster a culture of prevention, education, and support.

“Heart health impacts every family - especially in communities like ours,” said Anne Marie Candelario, Deputy Chief of School Leadership. “When we come together for events like this, we’re not only raising awareness but also empowering one another to make healthier choices and support lifelong well-being.”

The free, family-friendly walk offered more than just steps toward physical wellness. Participants also had access to informational resources, healthy snacks, and giveaways - all designed to spark conversations about cardiovascular health and encourage heart-healthy lifestyles at home.

For La Joya ISD, the Heart Walk represents a meaningful extension of its commitment beyond the classroom. By investing in the well-being of students and their families, the district continues to advance Strategic Priority 4: Community Trust, Unity & Partnership - ensuring that schools remain a hub for connection, support, and shared growth.

“La Joya ISD is proud to stand alongside our families in prioritizing health and wellness,” added Candelario. “When our community thrives, our students thrive.”

As American Heart Month wraps, La Joya ISD remains steadfast in its mission to support the whole child and the whole community - walking together toward a healthier future.
