LJISD CNS Food Expo

La Joya, TX - This February, La Joya ISD is putting heart health at the forefront -  not only through awareness, but through action. In observance of American Heart Month, the district’s Child Nutrition Services (CNS) Department is leading a series of initiatives designed to promote healthy habits, encourage nutritious choices, and support student well-being both in and beyond the cafeteria.

As part of its “Heart-Healthy February” efforts, La Joya ISD is serving meals that highlight fresh Texas produce through its farm-to-school partnership. By incorporating locally sourced ingredients, students are receiving nutritious, balanced options that fuel both their bodies and their academic success.

“At La Joya ISD, we understand that healthy students are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed,” said Rolando Hernandez, CNS Director. “During American Heart Month, we are intentionally highlighting heart-healthy choices that show our students nutritious meals can be both delicious and accessible. From fresh, locally sourced produce to balanced breakfasts and supper options, our goal is to support lifelong healthy habits - one meal at a time.”

Beyond implementing mindfulness of heart health, Heart-Healthy February incorporates fun while keeping wellness a priority. Part of the fun includes special Valentine’s Day inspired meals. On February 13, meals will feature healthy Valentine’s Day cookies and pink applesauce - adding a festive touch without compromising nutritional value.

Heart-Healthy February is part of a broader districtwide initiative to promote cardiovascular health. In addition to nutritious menu offerings, La Joya ISD will host its annual Heart Walk at the end of the month, encouraging students, staff, and families to stay active and prioritize heart health together.

Through nutritious meals, wellness initiatives, and community engagement opportunities, La Joya ISD remains committed to supporting student health - one meal, one step, and one heart-healthy choice at a time.
