Austin, TX - In a proud moment for the La Joya ISD community, Diaz-Villarreal Elementary was formally recognized at the state level as a 2025 Texas Lone Star Ribbon School, earning honors from the Texas Education Agency for its success in closing achievement gaps and advancing student academic achievement.
Campus Principal Bibiana Hinojosa and La Joya ISD Superintendent Dr. Marcey Sorensen represented the Diaz-Villarreal community in Austin during the recognition, accepting the distinction on behalf of the students, educators, staff, and families whose collective dedication made the achievement possible.
The Lone Star Ribbon School designation, first announced in September, identifies campuses across Texas that demonstrate exceptional academic performance and measurable progress in ensuring success for all student groups. Diaz-Villarreal Elementary is one of only 28 schools statewide to earn the distinction and one of just five schools in the Rio Grande Valley to receive the honor.
“This recognition reflects the heart of Diaz-Villarreal Elementary,” said Dr. Sorensen. “Their commitment to high expectations, strong instructional practices, and a culture that demonstrates a belief in all children - this is exactly what we strive for across La Joya ISD. We are incredibly proud of Principal Hinojosa, the staff, the educators, students, and families who continue to raise the bar for educational excellence for all children, every day, in every classroom.”
The recognition aligns with La Joya ISD’s strategic plan, specifically Priority 3: Thriving Students, which focuses on ensuring every learner is supported, challenged, and equipped to reach their full potential. Diaz-Villarreal Elementary’s work in closing achievement gaps highlights how intentional leadership, high-quality instruction, and strong family partnerships can create transformative outcomes for students.
“We share this recognition with our entire school community,” said Principal Hinojosa. “Our students’ success is the result of dedicated teachers, supportive families, and a belief that every child can achieve at high levels. We remain committed to building on this momentum and continuing to create opportunities for all students to thrive.”
The state-level acknowledgment not only celebrates Diaz-Villarreal Elementary’s accomplishments but also reinforces La Joya ISD’s ongoing mission of achieving excellence through leadership, collaboration, and a relentless focus on student success.
