Coach Rod Softball Field Undergoes Renovations

La Joya, TX - La Joya ISD is proud to share continued progress on the renovation of the Coach Rod Softball Field - a transformative project that elevates the student-athlete experience while honoring the legacy of longtime coach and mentor Carlos “Charlie” Rodriguez.

Located at the Leo Garza Jr. Athletics Complex, the field is undergoing a series of modern upgrades designed to enhance safety, functionality, and overall game-day experience. Current and upcoming improvements include the installation of synthetic turf, a digital scoreboard, renovated dugouts with expanded storage, upgraded bullpen areas, and a memorial dedication archway at the entrance - serving as a lasting tribute to Coach Rod’s profound impact on La Joya ISD athletics.

Earlier this school year, the La Joya ISD School Board unanimously approved a resolution to officially name the field in Coach Rodriguez’s honor, recognizing his decades of service, leadership, and dedication to advancing girls’ athletics across the district.

“Coach Rod left a legacy that continues to inspire our student-athletes to believe in themselves, work hard, and play with heart,” said S.B. Pierson, Chief of Operations & Infrastructure for La Joya ISD. “This project is about more than infrastructure - it’s about honoring a founding father of softball in our district and ensuring our students have access to facilities that reflect the excellence we strive for every day.”

Known for fostering sportsmanship, discipline, and unity, Coach Rod’s influence continues to resonate throughout the La Joya ISD community. His commitment to student growth—both on and off the field - remains a guiding force behind the district’s athletic culture.

“Coach Rod’s legacy goes far beyond wins and championships—he built a culture of pride, respect, and unity that defines La Joya ISD athletics,” said Joe Peña, Executive Director of Athletics for La Joya ISD. “This field will carry his story forward and remind every athlete what it truly means to represent La Joya.”

The renovation project aligns with La Joya ISD’s Achieving Excellence Together 2030 strategic plan, specifically supporting priorities centered on Operational Excellence and Thriving Students. By investing in high-quality facilities, the district is creating environments that inspire growth, promote wellness, and foster excellence.

With each phase completed, the Coach Rod Softball Field continues to take shape - blending legacy with innovation and reinforcing La Joya ISD’s commitment to student success, community pride, and athletic excellence.
