At La Joya ISD, leadership is defined by service, vision, and an unwavering commitment to student success. As we continue our Profile of Leadership Excellence series, we proudly spotlight Rosa Gonzalez Vela, Principal of Evangelina Garza Elementary School - a leader whose impact is felt in every classroom, every system, and every student experience on her campus.
For Principal Gonzalez-Vela, leadership begins with a clear belief: Educational Excellence is the right of every student. This guiding principle shapes her approach to school leadership and drives her daily work to ensure high-quality instruction, strong systems, and supportive learning environments are in place for all.
She defines leadership as creating a clear vision and inspiring others to work collectively toward shared goals.
“True leadership is not about authority,” said Gonzalez-Vela. “It is about impact, accountability, and the ability to bring out the best in others. I lead with clarity and high expectations while also ensuring that teachers, staff, students and families feel supported.”
Beyond a leadership style rooted in collaboration, instruction and service, Principal Gonzalez-Vela also uses transparency, data-driven decision-making, and consistent follow-through.
“By modeling professionalism, integrity, urgency, and a commitment to continuous improvement, I am setting a clear example for my staff,” said Gonzalez-Vela. “I am motivated by the knowledge that leadership decisions directly shape student outcomes and each choice, initiative, and system implemented carries a deep sense of responsibility — not only to students, but to families.”
Among her proudest accomplishments is building strong instructional systems that have led to measurable improvements in teaching, learning, and school culture. Through consistency in instructional practices, Principal Gonzalez-Vela has helped create environments where teachers feel supported and students feel truly seen.
Above all, Principal Gonzalez-Vela views leadership as a privilege.
“I approach it with gratitude, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families,” she shared. “My goal is to create a culture where excellence is the norm, where every person is empowered to succeed, and where the work we do today builds a stronger future for our campus and community.”
Her leadership reflects the heart of Excellence in Leadership and aligns seamlessly with Priority 1 of Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 — reminding us that when leaders serve with purpose, everyone rises.
