8th Graders Tour High School Campuses

La Joya, TX - For La Joya ISD’s Class of 2030, the future felt closer than ever as eighth-grade students stepped onto the campuses where they will soon begin their high school journey. Through coordinated high school transition tours, students had the opportunity to explore their future learning environments, ask questions, and begin envisioning themselves as confident, successful high school students.

The tours consisted of eighth graders from each of the district’s middle schools visiting their designated high schools, ensuring a smooth and personalized transition experience.

During the visits, students toured classrooms and common spaces, learned about academic programs and extracurricular opportunities, and received guidance on what to expect as incoming freshmen. Counselors and staff focused on helping students feel informed, supported, and excited as they prepare for the next chapter of their educational journey.

“This transition is a pivotal moment for our students,” said Gabriela Velasquez, Director of School Counseling for La Joya ISD. “These tours help students feel confident and prepared by giving them a clear understanding of their options, expectations, and the support systems available to them. When students know what lies ahead, they are empowered to make thoughtful decisions and take ownership of their future.”

The tours directly support Priority 2 of Achieving Excellence Together: 2030, which focuses on Empowered Graduates. By equipping students with the knowledge and awareness they need to make informed academic choices early on, students better understand graduation requirements, pathways, and opportunities, students begin high school with purpose and direction. Additionally, the experience reinforces Priority 3, which focuses on Thriving Students by addressing the social and emotional aspects of transition. Seeing familiar faces, walking the halls, and connecting with counselors and staff helps reduce anxiety and builds a sense of belonging—key factors in ensuring students feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed.

As La Joya ISD continues to prioritize intentional planning and student-centered supports, high school transition tours serve as a meaningful bridge between middle school and high school. For the Class of 2030, this experience marked an important step toward a future filled with confidence, opportunity, and achievement—one where every student is empowered to thrive from day one.
