La Joya, TX - In a world where youth face increasing pressures, La Joya ISD is taking proactive steps to empower families with the knowledge and tools needed to support their children’s wellbeing.
This National Vaping Awareness Month, La Joya ISD introduced a new series of parent sessions: Navigating Mental Health and Anti-Vaping Awareness - an initiative that allows for open meaningful conversations around two critical issues affecting today’s students: mental health and vaping.
Consisting of five sessions, the first of which were held at Palmview High School and the College and Career Center, the information sessions allow parents to engage in meaningful conversations about student wellness, affirming the district’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships between schools and families - a core pillar within Achieving Excellence Together: 2030.
During the More Than a Mood presentation, parents explored the foundations of youth mental health, including early detection, communication strategies, and how to create safe, supportive spaces for children to share their feelings.
The Decoding the Cloud session provided families with clear, accessible information about the dangers of vaping and why so many young people are drawn into it. District specialists guided parents through the latest data, marketing tactics used by the vaping industry, the health consequences facing teens, and practical steps to have honest conversations at home.
Both sessions emphasized one essential message: when families, educators, and the community come together, students thrive.
With two sessions complete and strong community engagement already underway, La Joya ISD is preparing to welcome families to three more sessions that will take place across the district. Parents are encouraged to attend any of the remaining sessions:

“We want our parents to feel confident and equipped to have tough but important conversations with their children,” said La Joya ISD Police Chief Leonardo Sanchez. “By working together, we can address the mental and physical health challenges that too often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Awareness is the first step toward prevention.”
