LJISD Social Worker Wins Stacie MdGee Student Scholar Award

La Joya, TX – Rooted in its legacy of excellence, La Joya ISD is proud to celebrate one of its own carrying that legacy forward. Laura Aguilera, a social worker at the district’s College & Career Center, was recently recognized with the 2025 Stacie McGee Student Scholar Award - a distinction that recognizes heart, advocacy, and academic excellence in social work across Texas.

The award recognizes more than Laura’s work with La Joya ISD. As a social work graduate student at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), the Stacie McGee Student Scholar Award recognizes social work students whose writing, research, and advocacy are creating meaningful change in communities.

“To me, this distinction represents more than recognition, it represents heart and passion,” said Aguilera. “It honors students who are using their education and lived experiences to push for change in their communities. Being chosen reminds me why I chose this profession in the first place.”

Beyond earning the award, Aguilera’s distinction is a historic one; she is the first graduate student from UTRGV to receive the award - an honor she describes as surreal, emotional, and deeply humbling.

“As a first-generation student, as a Latina from the Rio Grande Valley, as someone who grew up in La Joya, this award feels like a victory not just for me, but for my community,” said Aguilera. “It shows that our stories and our voices belong in statewide conversations.”

Once a student of La Joya ISD and now working within the district she says shaped her, Aguilera believes this award strengthens her mission to support students whose challenges often go unseen. More than an award, receiving this honor allows Aguilera to fulfill Priority Four of Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 - Community Trust, Unity & Partnership, which focuses on bridging the gap between home and school through strong relationships and transparent communication.

“As a social worker, we do more than provide support - we help students navigate trauma, crises, anxiety and so much more - all while ensuring our families feel seen and heard,” said Aguilera. “Ultimately, this award fuels my commitment to continue showing up for our kids, our families and our community.”

Aguilera’s recognition is not only a triumph for her, but for La Joya ISD, UTRGV, and the Rio Grande Valley. Her achievement uplifts our students, honors our community, and reflects the unwavering belief that every story can lead to purpose. The district is proud to stand beside her as she continues advocating, leading, and inspiring the next generation of La Joya ISD students.
