LJISD Launches New Instructional Planning Calendars

La Joya, TX - Laser-focused on elevating classroom instruction, La Joya ISD has made significant new investments in teacher and campus support to strengthen teaching and learning across every grade level.

In response to classroom observations and teacher feedback, La Joya ISD has launched new Instructional Planning Calendars (IPCs) designed to support teachers in lesson internalization and allow them to focus their time on delivering high-impact instruction. The IPCs provide clear, actionable guidance on what to teach, how to teach it, and how to assess student learning. Each calendar includes TEKS-aligned instructional priorities, annotated lessons, required Demonstrations of Learning (DOLs), and curated lesson resources—helping educators across the district plan effectively and deliver consistent, high-quality instruction.

“High-quality instruction begins with intentional planning,” said Dr. Derek Little, Chief of Academics & School Leadership. “The IPCs give teachers a roadmap that saves time, strengthens lesson design, and ensures students are receiving engaging and effective instruction across every classroom.”

The IPC rollout is part of a broader strategic action to accelerate the quality of daily instruction students receive under La Joya ISD’s Achieving Excellence Together 2030 Strategic Plan. In addition to the new planning calendars, the district is introducing spot check observations, enhanced coaching and PLC support, and DOL tracking systems to help principals and teachers monitor progress and adjust instruction in real time.

To further strengthen instructional quality, the district has made a significant investment of more than $1.7 million to expand professional coaching and training partnerships with four leading education organizations:

  • Carnegie Learning (Middle School Math) – 15 coaching days per campus, plus 20 flexible coaching days and customized leadership workshops (~$415,000)

  • Great Minds (K–5 Math) – 113 additional coaching days and expanded leadership support (~$400,000)

  • Teaching Lab (K–5 RLA) – On-site biweekly coaching and virtual leadership support (~$556,500)

  • SchoolKit (6–8 RLA) – 30 new on-site coaching days and 17 training days (~$301,000)

“These partnerships ensure our teachers have access to expert coaching and real-time feedback,” said Dr. Little. “By investing in instructional coaching and targeted support, we’re empowering our educators to refine their craft and maximize student learning.”

Through these new systems, La Joya ISD aims to create a more aligned, data-driven approach to instruction, one where every classroom has access to the same high standards, clear expectations, and strong instructional support.

“This is a powerful step toward creating instructional excellence in every classroom,” added Dr. Little. “When we equip teachers with clarity, coaching, and collaboration, our students benefit the most.”
