La Joya, TX – La Joya ISD proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of student-athlete Matt Ortiz, a La Joya High School senior who signed his letter of intent to continue his baseball career at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
Surrounded by family, teammates, coaches and school administrators, Ortiz made his commitment official during a special ceremony held at his campus. His signing marks a milestone in both his athletic and academic journey, reflecting years of dedication, discipline and passion for the game.
“I have been playing baseball since I was six years old and this moment is a dream come true for me,” said Ortiz. “All I ever wanted was to play and let my skill and talents earn me a scholarship.”
Head baseball coach for La Joya High School, Guadalupe Barrera, who also played baseball for UTRGV, then UTPA, praises Ortiz for his commitment, talent and ambition saying he takes pride in having one of his own athletes play for a program he was once a part of.
“Matt represents the heart of what it means to be a student-athlete at La Joya ISD,” said Barrera. “His leadership on the field and determination in the classroom have set an example for younger players. We could not be prouder to see him take this next step at the collegiate level. The Vaqueros got themselves a good one!”
Beyond joining a nationally recognized baseball program known for its competitive edge and commitment to player development, Ortiz plans to major in kinesiology and one day consider a future that includes coaching baseball.
La Joya ISD congratulates Ortiz on his remarkable accomplishment and wishes him continued success when he begins his exciting new venture with UTRGV Baseball.
