LJISD PD Holds Memorial Ceremony for Beloved K-9 Officer

La Joya, TX – The La Joya ISD Police Department gathered today with heavy hearts and deep gratitude to celebrate the life and service of its beloved K-9, Lucky - a loyal companion, steadfast protector and symbol of courage whose service left an unforgettable mark on the district and community he served.

Lucky served the La Joya ISD Police Department with unwavering commitment, courage and compassion. Trained in narcotics detection and campus safety operations, Lucky was more than a working dog - he was a guardian who brought comfort and reassurance to the students and staff he protected. Whether patrolling school grounds, attending community events, or greeting students in the halls, Lucky’s presence represented safety, loyalty, and love.

"Lucky embodied everything we strive for in law enforcement - loyalty, service and heart,” said La Joya ISD Police Chief Leonardo Sanchez. “He wasn’t just part of our team; he was family. His courage kept our campuses safe and his spirit will continue to guide and inspire our department for years to come.”

The heartfelt memorial brought together students, staff, district leadership and various local law enforcement agencies. The program featured a Presentation of Colors by the La Joya High School JROTC Honor Guard and a Presentation of Ashes by K-9 Officer Christian Rosales - Lucky’s devoted handler. Chief Sanchez also led a Final Salute for Lucky, which featured a touching tribute from other K-9 Officers who paid their respects to Lucky.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marcey Sorensen expressed the district’s deep appreciation for Lucky’s loyal service and the profound bond he shared with his handler and department. Additionally, Officer Rosales shared a few words on Lucky and his impact on him and his family.

“More than my partner, Lucky was my best friend,” expressed Rosales. “He never hesitated when it came to his duty - he just gave his all every single day. Knowing he protected our students and loved this community as much as I do is something I will carry with me forever.”

While his watch may have ended, Lucky’s legacy will continue to protect and inspire those who follow in his pawprints. His spirit will live in every student he safeguarded, every partner he stood beside and every life he touched - a hero that is forever a part of La Joya ISD.
