LJISD Hosting Series of Events throughout Diabetes Awareness Month

La Joya, TX – In observance of Diabetes Awareness Month in November, La Joya ISD is promoting health and wellness through a series of community events designed to to encourage diabetes education, prevention and collective well-being across the Rio Grande Valley - one of the regions in the nation most impacted by diabetes.

Taking place every Tuesday throughout the month of November, each event is community-centered and aims to bring families together through learning and movement. Activities will highlight practical steps families can take to improve their overall health, from nutritious cooking to active living.

“Health and education go hand in hand,” said Annette Lozano, Executive Director of Student, Family & Community Engagement. “By empowering families with knowledge and access to wellness resources, we are building a stronger, healthier community for our students and future generations.”

Kicking off on Tuesday, November 4, at 10:00 a.m. with a “Cooking for Life” Parent Workshop hosted at the La Joya ISD Planetarium, families will take part in a cooking demonstration and an information session where they will learn about reading nutrition labels, managing sugar intake and shopping for healthy and affordable meals.

Throughout the month, additional sessions such as Family Wellness Night and Zumba for a Healthy Beat will encourage physical activity and family engagement, emphasizing that small, consistent steps toward health can have a long-term impact.

All events lead up to the district’s annual Diabetes Awareness Community Walk happening on Saturday, November 15 at 8:00 a.m., at La Joya ISD Pack Stadium. The walk will include opportunities for free glucose and blood pressure screenings, as well as a chance for the community to gather in support of those impacted by diabetes.

“In an area like the Rio Grande Valley, where diabetes affects so many of our loved ones, awareness and early prevention can make all the difference,” said Lozano. “When our schools and families unite for a cause like this, we create change that reaches beyond the classroom and into the community.”
