La Joya, TX – Designed to help student athletes succeed, La Joya ISD Athletics is keeping up the momentum behind its new Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT Program).
The program held its monthly meeting this week where team captains from La Joya High School, Palmview High School and Juarez-Lincoln High School gathered to discuss the importance of scores and results from the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment.
“Beyond building character and resilience, SALT also encourages a college-ready culture,” said Joe Peña, Executive Director of Athletics for La Joya ISD. “By promoting this sort of collaboration among students, we are ensuring our students thrive on and beyond the field.”
Aside from TSI scores, student-athletes also discussed the core values within their athletics program and analyzed their “why.”
“We have them ask themselves why,” explained Peña. “Why are they playing this sport? Why do they want to be a leader? Once they can answer that, then they begin collaborating with other students and can inspire as well as be inspired.”
October’s SALT meeting also involved student athletes participating in various leadership activities to encourage public speaking and allow for collaboration, communication and unity among the district’s three high schools.
“We are here to support one another and cheer each other on,” said Peña. “In addition to that, these student-athletes develop leadership and character skills they will carry beyond the field and into all aspects of life.”
