Students Arrive at Jimmy Carter ECHS

La Joya, TX – La Joya ISD has officially launched the consolidated Jimmy Carter Early College High School (ECHS), marking a significant step forward in its mission to prepare students for college, career and life.

The newly unified campus brings together students from the former Academy of Health Science Professions and STEM (HSP), La Joya ECHS and Thelma Salinas ECHS.

The consolidation not only creates a dynamic learning community but also ensures expanded opportunities for students to pursue higher education while experiencing the benefits of a traditional high school setting.

This new school year marks a historic first for the campus as 225 new freshmen were welcomed; they are among the first cohort to be admitted into and attend the consolidated campus beginning a four-year journey filled with typical high school experiences while also committing to earning an Associate’s degree.

“La Joya ISD has a steadfast commitment to ensuring every student at Jimmy Carter ECHS receives the guidance, support and resources necessary to complete their degree programs and succeed in their chosen pathways,” said Luis Bocanegra, Principal of Carter ECHS. “This consolidation has allowed the district to expand opportunities for all students while strengthening our early college mission.”

Aligning with the district’s five-year strategic plan – Achieving Excellence Together 2030 – the launch of Carter ECHS focuses on preparing graduates to thrive beyond high schools. By offering rigorous academic programs and intentional support, La Joya ISD is reinforcing its dedication to developing graduates who are fully prepared for higher education and the workforce.

“Our students deserve an education that opens doors to any postsecondary pathway they choose,” said Dr. Derek Little, Chief of Academics and School Leadership for La Joya ISD. “The launch of Carter ECHS is a testament to our district’s dedication to providing innovative, future-focused education that prepares students for success in higher education and beyond.”

Jimmy Carter ECHS represents La Joya ISD’s continued efforts to expand access to higher education opportunities and create a cohesive early college experience for students across the community.
