March 25, 2025 — First graders at EB Reyna Elementary are embracing healthy habits through UTRGV’s STEPS (Students Taking Empowered Physical Steps) program. The initiative promotes wellness through music, movement, and nutrition education in classrooms, PE, and the cafeteria. Students learn about balanced meals, physical activity, and good habits through fun songs and games. PE classes feature active lessons that reinforce healthy living, while the cafeteria encourages smart food choices with colorful displays and nutritious options. Teachers and parents report students are more excited about eating healthy and staying active. “It’s a fun way for them to learn,” said Mrs. Tovar, a first-grade teacher. The STEPS program, led by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is making a lasting impact by helping young learners build a foundation for lifelong wellness.
