Alliance for a Healthier Generation

Posted Date: 10/01/2020

We're proud to celebrate our newest award for their commitment to prioritizing nutrition, physical activity, and strong wellness policies. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation announced that 36 of our La Joya ISD schools have earned the BRONZE award! We celebrate as this is the 2nd year that ALL of La Joya ISD schools have attained a AHG Award making it back to back!

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, is honoring 518 schools across the nation – 78% of which serve students from under-resourced communities – for promoting quality nutrition, regular physical activity and strong wellness policies.

So thrilled to have all 23 La Joya ISD Elementary Schools on this exemplary list. Along with all 8 of our Middle Schools & 5 of our High Schools.  We are very proud of all our LJISD teachers and our Food and Nutrition Department for our collaboration to accomplish this goal.

Though the submission data for this year’s list – recognized annually as “America’s Healthiest Schools” – was gathered prior to COVID-19-related school closures, schools that leveraged these strong foundations in wellness were positioned to prioritize healthy habits throughout the pandemic; for example:

  • Preparing and distributing free, healthy meals to families
  • Distributing online social-emotional and mental health resources to students, families and staff
  • Meet or exceed federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks
  • Offer breakfast daily
  • Incorporate physical activity before, during or after the school day
  • Implement district wellness policies and update progress annually
  • Involve parents and community members in decision-making

Marissa Saenz District Wellness Strategist emphasized how important this is to our district with her excitement. “I’m so excited for our district, we worked so hard during this tough year to coordinate with all the schools to make sure we met our goals in the safest way possible. Thank you to the School Board Members, Administrators & Staff for the hard work ! Our next goal is 3 years in a row. ”
