Elementary, middle and high school book club members at La Joya ISD recently took part in a friendly, tournament style competition known as “Battle of the Books”. This intra-district event tested students’ knowledge of pre-selected books that were read in a span of four months. The 23 elementary campuses 8 middles and 5 high schools were represented in teams of 4 from each school all in hopes of being named “2020 Battle of the Books Champions” for each division which consisted of elementary, middle and high school.
As a means of encouraging their students to read more in-depth while having fun, LJISD Library Services and the librarians at each of the schools came together to organize this contest unique in its kind at La Joya ISD. Complete with a timekeeper, a scorer, two judges, and an emcee, the competition began with the first round. Round after round, each group went head-to-head answering very specific questions from the five books that each division had.
Congratulations to this year’s La Joya ISD Battle of the books 2020 from the elementary division congratulations to Juan N. Seguin Elementary, from the middle school division congratulations to Irene M. Garcia Middle School, and from the High School division congratulations to Palmview High School.
Recognition and gratitude goes out to all librarians who invested in their campus book clubs and who helped prepare the students for the day’s challenge.
