2019 District Battle of the Books Champions

La Joya ISD Library Services department began hosting the Middle School Battle of the Books 5 years ago, the Elementary battle 3 years ago, and for High Schools - this year was their 1sttime competing one another within the school district. The literary combats keep getting bigger and better every year, and the interest from the students too has grown tremendously!

As a means of encouraging their students to read more in-depth while having fun, LJISD librarians at each campus came together to organize 3 friendly competitions from every level. Complete with a timekeeper and scorer, three judges, and an emcee, the battles began with randomly chosen teams. Round after round, each team took turns answering very specific questions from each of the five books they read since the beginning of the school year.

The Elementary Battle was conquered by this year’s winners, JFK Elementary. At the Middle School level, it was Ann Richards MS who took the 1stplace beating the 2-time returning champs from JD Salinas Middle School. And for the high school teams, Jimmy Carter Early College High School became the first High School Battle of the Books Champions!

The victors each earned a $50.00 gift card to Barnes & Noble and all participants walked away with certificates and event shirts. The winners will also be recognized during a board meeting and receive individual and campus trophies.

Recognition and gratitude goes out to all of the school librarians who invested their time to help prepare the students for the challenge, and a very special thank you to Ms. Alma Salinas, Director of Library Services and Instructional Resources at La Joya ISD, and the staff at the Sports & Learning Complex and the Peñitas Library for putting all the pieces together to achieve very successful events.
