Operation: Beards for Blue Santa
The season for generosity and giving is upon us and the La Joya ISD Police Department is changing up their “look” to help raise funds for those in need.
Though district policy mandates that all police department staff maintain a clean-shave face (for the males) and low hair bun (for the females), this year (throughout the months of November & December) staff was allowed to grow a beard or sport a pony tail for a fee of $25.00 per month. This is an effort to collect monies that will go to helping 3 identified families who are in need within the school district.
“Over 38 of our staff are currently participating in this fundraiser,” said Raul Gonzalez, Chief of Police at La Joya ISD. “The idea came from one of our officers, Jose Mendez, and it just took off from there! With the monies collected between now and December, we’ll have close to $2,000 to buy clothes, food, or toys for a family from each of our clusters,” Gonzalez added.
Items bought will be personally delivered by the LJISD Police on the 23rdand 24thof December.
So, when someone comes into contact with an officer in the community or on campus and they look a bit scruffy - please know it is for a great cause!
