Dr. Alda T. Benavides, formerly the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, was officially named as La Joya ISD’s Schools Superintendent on September 18, 2006. As a graduate of La Joya High School, Dr. Benavides went on to attend the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and English. She later earned a Superintendent Certificate in 1985 and holds additional certifications for Mid-Management Administrator, Counselor, Supervisor, Elementary Self-Contained, and Bilingual/ESL. Benavides also earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership in 2001 from the UTPA.
While working as a teacher, Benavides studied to receive her Master of Arts Degree in Counseling and Administration for UTPA which opened up additional opportunities such as working as an Elementary and Secondary Counselor, a High School Assistant Principal, an Alternative Center Coordinator and a Principal at E.B. Reyna Elementary School where she served for 8 years. It was through her leadership and vision that E.B. Reyna Elementary School earned several national awards and recognitions that included being named a Blue Ribbon School, a National Drug Free School, and National Title 1 School. She also received a National Distinguished Principal Award for her outstanding achievement in School Leadership.
Being a successful school principal enabled Dr. Benavides to share her knowledge with her fellow colleagues when she was offered the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction where she served for 9 years. As Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Benavides has seen how much growth La Joya ISD has experienced throughout her tenure, and she has served a vital role in helping the district progress in the instructional programs offered to its students. Each year, schools continue to gain numerous regional, state and national awards for the level of quality work done by the school teachers, administrators and instructional leaders working together towards one common goal: educational excellence for every student.
Dr. Benavides has dedicated her life’s work to the La Joya ISD and is a prime example of what being a lifelong learner is all about. She has proven that through hard work and dedication, any person can achieve their dreams and live a life of success.
