Chavez Middle School teacher Laura Alvarez underwent the Middle School Aerospace
Scholars program sponsored by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space
Administration) last July where middle school teachers from across the state
spent one week at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston learning how to
incorporate NASA’s educational resources in the classroom.
On Monday, February 1, Alvarez’ students used videoconferencing to work with
the Line Up with Math interactive online simulator where students experienced
the challenges of being an Air Traffic Controller overseeing two to five planes
in the air. Students prepared for the activity by completing math assignments
that were applied during the simulation.
“My goal in working with NASA is to motivate the students to excel in their
educational careers,” said Alvarez. “A great way to inspire middle school
students is by providing a fun, interesting way of learning, which will
captivate them to be exposed to real-life activities.”
As part of Alvarez’ commitment to the program, her class will hold at least
three distance learning events this school year. The upcoming topics will be
Career Exploration (for NASA Explorer Schools), Introduction to Robotics in the
Classroom, and Mapping the Moon with WALL-E.
