Dr. Americo Paredes Elementary School students in the KADA (Kids Against Drugs &
Alcohol) Club and the Student Council presented a check of nearly $700 to the
American Red Cross to go towards their “Coins for A Cause” campaign for Haiti.
A special assembly was held Monday, February 1, where KADA Club Treasurer
Xiomara Veliz and Student Council Treasurer Ralph Guerrero handed the check to
Michael A. Huckabee, Executive Director for the American Red Cross-South Texas
Chapter.
Students collected from parents, grandparents and their piggy banks to fill the
classroom jars. The top contributors were recognized at the assembly, with Mrs.
San Juanita Riojas’ third-grade class taking first place with $112.74, Ms.
Ahlondra Galvan’s fifth-grade classes taking second place with $64.14, and Mrs.
Evangelina Sotelo’s first-grade class taking third place with $45.14 collected.
The coin collection was held from January 21-28. All monies will be used to
help those affected by the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.
