Teachers across the district are being celebrated for their hard work and
dedication to the education field as this week marks Teacher Appreciation Week
(May 4-10). However, at La Joya High School, there was even a greater cause
for celebration as one of their very own was also recognized as one of the best
educators in Texas for 2008!
A surprise reception was held yesterday to honor Arnold Gutierrez, a Drafting
Engineering teacher at La Joya High School, for being named as the State Winner
for this year's HEB's Educator in Excellence Award (Leadership Secondary
category). The Leadership Secondary Category honors teachers with 10 to 20
years in the classroom.
The competition was held in Houston, May 2-3 with the awards celebration on May
4, 2008 at The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center. At the celebration, 10
grand prize winners were announced and awarded cash prizes totaling more than
$500,000. Because Gutierrez was named as the state winner, he will receive a
$10,000 check for himself and a $10,000 grant for La Joya High School.
Gutierrez was the only teacher representing the Border Region and competed
against 4 other candidates who are:
Marcella Gutierrez, Thomas Jefferson High School, San Antonio
Christie McWilliams, Cy-Fair High School, Cypress
Joel Price, Westwood Jr. High School, Dallas
Valerie Thiry, Yoakum Jr. High School, Yoakum
HEB awards more than $500,000 in cash prizes to teachers, principals, and
school districts across Texas in recognition of their commitment to offering a
high quality education to all students.
