For several years, the La Joya Independent School established a health committee that met in an effort to discuss health issues that affected our children in the LJISD. Recently, Senate Bill 1357 mandated the implementation of a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). Each school distriState is required by the Education Code, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004 to establish and maintain a district-level school health advisory council. The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) of the La Joya Independent School District is specifically authorized by the Board of Trustees in District policy BFD (Legal).

The SHAC plays a vital role as an advisory council to the Board of Trustees. The primary purpose of the SHAC is to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction. As an advisory board, the purpose of the SHAC is to provide guidance, recommendations, and other assistance to the Board of Trustees as is specifically listed in state law and District policy. The SHAC shall have no power to expend public funds, enter into contracts, or otherwise place obligation or liability upon the district.
