Eduardo Rivas, a student at Thelma R. Salinas STEM Early College High School, was recently announced as a silver key (2nd place) winner for the 2018 Scholastic Awards in the photography category.
At the regional competition, Rivas placed first in the same category and was awarded the golden key – securing him a place at the national competition where he then earned 2nd place from a pool of contestants from across the United States.
“I wanted to show humbleness and happiness – even with the lack of hood health,” said Rivas of his photograph. “… and I was also inspired by Edith Paf’s “La Vida De La Rosa”.”
Taken with a professional Nikon D5600 camera, Eduardo titled his photograph Red Sky because of the indistinguishable and unique red sky shown in the background.
“Initially when I found out about the success of my photo, I was shocked and in disbelief because I wasn’t even going to submit it to begin with. I felt zero confidence,” Rivas added.
Eduardo would like to thank his art teacher, Mr. Esli Galvan for motivating him to submit his photo and also to the person who lent him the camera.
Congratulations to the student artist on the exciting accomplishment and for representing La Joya ISD at the national level.
