Early January, the LJ Palmview HS Mariachi Director received notice of a special invitation to participate in this year’s National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
Both, Grupo Folklorico Ozomatli and Mariachi Los Lobos, were nominated by Congressman Vicente Gonzalez and the American Veterans Center to perform at the May 28th event and be the official representatives of the state of Texas.
“It’s unbelievable that for the second time, our students get selected to perform at the national level,” stated Mayra Garcia, Music Director at LJ Palmview High School. “Our first experience as participants (in former President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade) was amazing, and we look forward to taking this opportunity now to once again showcase the talent of La Joya ISD at our nation’s capital,” Garcia added.
Since the announcement of their invitation, the organizations have been working hard fundraising to cover trip expenses and are accepting donations from our local businesses and community.
The National Memorial Day Parade will take place on Historic Constitution Avenue before a street audience of several hundred thousand spectators. It will consist of musical ensembles from each branch of the military, invited bands from every state in America, veterans groups, military and specialty units, floats and VIP’s.
Folklorico principal dancer, Alan Zarate expressed, “I’m so excited and proud to have been chosen to represent our state, but I’m even more thrilled to represent my culture.”
The parade is broadcast annually on the Discovery’s Military Channel and worldwide to American troops on the Pentagon Channel.
Congratulations to the 2 organizations who will have an opportunity to honor America’s war heroes at such a prestigious and reputable event.
