Throughout the academic school year, participating high school theatre productions in Hidalgo County were adjudicated by a panel of arts professionals to be nominated for the Tony Awards-style event known as The Palms Awards. In this inaugural year, La Joya ISD theater groups did an outstanding job and all received nominations in several categories.
During the nomination announcement breakfast for The Palms 2018, our LJ Palmview High School InterACT Theatre Company, with their production of Hairspray! was nominated in 11 categories for their musical, Hairspray! Including Best Production, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Leading Actress, and Best Supporting Actor amongst others.
The Academy Coyote Theatre from La Joya High School received three nominations for their musical Assassins! for Best Leading Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Musical Score.
LJ Juarez-Lincoln HS Top Hat earned a nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actor for their rendition of Beauty & The Beast Musical.
The mission of The Palms “is to foster the love of the arts, locally, by awarding recognition and offering support to the high school theater community in Hidalgo County, with the purpose of enhancing the awareness and importance of theatre arts education within our community… along with honoring the hard work and commitment of students by giving recognition to their exceptional accomplishments in high school theatre.”
Participating Districts include: La Joya, Edinburg, McAllen, Sharyland, PSJA, Mission, Valley View and Weslaco.
The Palms will recognize and celebrate Hidalgo County student talent and dedication this April 21st, 2018 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available to the public, online or at the McAllen Convention Center and Performing Arts Center Box Offices.
