“Each year, mariachi students flock to San Antonio from around the nation and other countries for the rare opportunity to hear, meet in person, and study directly with members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Aside from giving concerts and teaching workshops, Mariachi Vargas members adjudicate the largest and most competitive mariachi group and vocal competitions in the WORLD.” – Mariachimusic.com
This year, at the annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Vocal Competition, four La Joya ISD students will compete for the title of “Best in the U.S.” to be held at the Lila Cockrell Theatre in San Antonio on Saturday, Dec. 2,2017.
Forty-four vocal finalists will perform for and compete in front of a panel of judges made up of members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. “These students represent the best of thousands of young mariachi artists from across the United States,” says Cynthia Muñoz, Producer of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. “This is a nail-biting event centered around a tough competition that is thrilling to watch,” she says.
Judging criteria include vocal quality, diction, intonation, phrasing and interpretation.
“This is an amazing opportunity for our students to be able to experience competing at the national level and surely will remember this event for the rest of their lives. We are very proud of all of their accomplishments and wish them the best this coming Saturday!” stated La Joya Palmview HS Mariachi Director, Mayra A. Garcia.
Our 4 finalists are: Cecilia Garcia (11) from LJ Palmview HS, San Juanita Garcia (11) La Joya HS, Betsabe Garcia (9) Jimmy Carter Early College HS, and Shanty Zumaya (8) from Dr. Javier Saenz MS.
