Sustaining a solid reputation in financial reporting, the La Joya ISD business office has consistently earned distinctions and has been granted several important acknowledgements for the past 7 years – and this year is no different.

Once again, the department has been honored with the ASBO Certificate of Excellence award, the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting award, and a second GFOA recognition for the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) meeting all requirements.

The first of the accolades bestowed by ASBO, stated the following about La Joya ISD:

“The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded La Joya Independent School District its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for having met or exceeded the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability.”

This respected organization not only provides programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business management practices, but also stimulates professional growth and the effective use of education resources. With their granting of the Certificate of Excellence award, they solidify the school business office’s pledge to financial responsibility and translucence for all stakeholders, while helping to strengthen and promote high quality financial reporting.

“The Texas Education Agency already requires all business offices in every school district to gather and present financial data in an annual finance report,” said Joel Treviño, La Joya ISD Executive Director for Budget and Finance. “However, we go above and beyond the requirements to include additional information to the report as a means of demonstrating financial transparency, which in turn opens up opportunities to be granted a number of awards.”

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), which offers services designed to enhance the skills and performance of those responsible for government finance policy and management, also endowed their highest form of recognition to La Joya ISD.

The GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting was granted based on the district’s comprehensive annual fiscal report (CAFR), and “the attainment of this recognition represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management,” stated the GFOA news release.

Additionally, a panel of independent reviewers who examined the PAFR found that the Popular Annual Financial Report met all requirements of the PAFR program which are based on areas such as reader appeal, understandability, distribution, amongst others.

“What began as a challenge for our business office 7 years ago has now become an expectation and a standard,” added Alfredo Vela, Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Finance at La Joya ISD. “… and at the end of months of preparation, it truly was a team effort – as it takes a group of people to generate the final product to submit.”

With the continual display of hard work and integrity, La Joya ISD tax payers can feel confident knowing that district financial statements are certifiably proven to be transparent and presented fairly by several agencies. Congratulations to the entire Administration and Finance team for the outstanding work that allows our school district to shine.
