Every student at Juan Seguin Elementary received a very memorable surprise this past Friday, October 21st. Through diverse entities such as Communities in Schools and Child Fund International, each student on that campus was gifted a brand new pair of TOMS shoes!
Annually, Child Fund International goes through a selection process to choose schools to distribute TOMS to; and this year, four of our campuses were selected: Seguin, Clinton, Chapa and Zapata Elementary.
For the last three years (consecutively) numerous schools within La Joya ISD have been recipients of this donation which benefits the population of children who are most in need.
“I am ecstatic and humbled to see our students receive new shoes”, stated Jacqueline Escobedo, Principal at Seguin Elementary.
TOMS offers brand new, made-to-order shoes, in a variety of styles to meet the needs of the children their Giving Partners serve.
“It’s not only about giving the students a new pair of shoes, it’s about sending a message too”, stated Alejandro Oyoque, Public Information Officer for Child Fund. “… today, the message was about American astronaut, Neil Armstrong and his legacy of being the first person to walk on the Moon,” Oyoque added.
The lesson delved into Neil Armstrong’s famous saying: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Famous words that made students reflect on how their own small contributions can change the world in their new pair of TOMS shoes.
“I am so happy for my new shoes because now I will be able to run really fast”, said Aidan Flores, 1st Grade student at Seguin Elementary.
With over 600 pairs of shoes given, the students at Seguin Elementary will be ready to take on the year and completely focus on their studies.
