Palmview High School’s Grupo Folklorico “Ozomatli” became the overall winner at the ACADEZ (Academia de la Danza Amalia Hernandez) National Folklorico/Contemporary Dance Competition held this past weekend in San Antonio. The group was chosen for their diverse repertoire, technical ability, and overall showmanship!
“Hard work and dedication will always pay off,” said Mr. Rolando Rodriguez, Folklorico Director for Grupo Folklorico “Ozomatli”, also known as “the Sir” by his students.
The accomplishment gave way for an official invitation to the CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts) expo to take place in Mexico in June of 2017.
CIOFF festivals (official partners of UNESCO) take place in different locations across the world every year where it welcomes over 32 countries such as Colombia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, Russia, France, Cuba, and many more.
The Palmview HS group was one of only two groups (the other from Chicago) chosen from the United States to represent our country at the international event next year.
“This invitation is a very big deal in the world of Folkloric dance,” added Rodriguez. “If allowed to participate, La Joya ISD will represent all of southern United States, which make it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the group dancers and for our district.”
Without a doubt a huge congratulations goes out to Grupo Folklorico “Ozomatli” for their distinguished recognition and honor of being offered a bid to a worldwide cultural event. Thank you to the directors, staff, and administrators at Palmview HS for continuing to support the Arts!
