For the past 6 years, Mariachi Los Lobos from Palmview High School has consistently ranked in the top 3 groups in Texas – twice earning State Championship titles in 2010 and 2015.

This year, the group of musicians came home with second place medals after attending the Texas Association of Mariachi Educators (TAME) State Mariachi competition in San Antonio.

“My group this year has been the best-sounding group since the mariachi program initiated here at Palmview High School,” said director Mayra Garcia of her students. “… and I am extremely proud of their advancement and award at TAME.”

With the music competition under new management, Garcia and her group of students agree that every school that participated was not only well prepared and brought their A-game, but also that judges were true experts in the field, which made the overall contest difficult – but good.

“ We definitely feel grateful for the prize we received,” added mariachi student, Adrian Barrientos. “I’ve been in the mariachi program since the 6th grade, and now that I’m a Junior, I can honestly say that belonging to this organization has opened up a possible future for me as a mariachi educator. We are all very proud of our accomplishment.”

Despite the fact that the majority of the group members juggle schoolwork, concerts, outside performances, and after-school jobs, PHS Mariachi Los Lobos has always well represented La Joya ISD at the state level and are considered to be one of the top high school mariachi programs in Texas.

Congratulations to Mariachi Los Lobos, and their director, Ms. Mayra Garcia, for continuing a tradition of excellence and for making La Joya ISD proud.
